Over thirty Members of the club with family and volunteers enjoyed a coach trip to Kent and East Sussex Railway for a steam train ride with ploughman's lunch on board. The club is very grateful to SBC coaches and Southend Age Concern who stepped in at the last minute to help with transport when the booked coach was unavailable at short notice.

On the evening of Monday 11th July Southend Stroke Club spent a very pleasant evening at the Royal Oak pub in Stambridge. Thanks are due not only to Alan Watkins who made the arrangements but also the staff at the Royal Oak who made us so welcome and provided an excellent and generous buffet as usual.

On Monday 18th May thirty three Members and friends enjoyed an Outing to the Fish and Eels pub in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, followed by a cruise on the River Lee. We returned from Ware where the coach met us near the river. Whilst the weather could have been better everyone enjoyed an excellent meal and an interesting trip. The disability coach meant that anyone with mobility problems could come along and use the coach lift for access. Staff at the pub, on the barge and coach were, without exception, kind, caring and efficient and helped to 'make the day'.

The club normally meets at St. Mary's Church Hall in Prittlewell. However, due to problems with the condition of the hall it will be out of action for some time whilst repairs are carried out. For the time being, the club is meeting at The Crowstone Christian Centre in Kings Road, Westcliff-on-Sea. All other details remain the same. Dates, times, etc.

Over the past few weeks the club has been fortunate in the number of donations received. The families of Sylvia Gargan and Gerry Williams donated in memory of these two members, who recently left us, whilst a further donation was received in memory of a Hockley lady who died following a stroke. Members of the Essex County Bowls Club kindly donated £912, following a tournament, whilst £200 was donated by Freemasons Grand Charity. During May/June we were top of the shop at Shoebury Asda's community fundraising scheme receiving £200. However, by far the largest donation (£1000) came courtesy of the fundraising efforts of the Service Centre Staff at the local headquarters of Royal Bank of Scotland. The club is extremely grateful to all concerned.

On the evening of Monday 23rd June about 40 Members, helpers and friends enjoyed a lovely Summer's evening at the Royal Oak Pub in Stambridge. As usual, the pub laid on a very good buffet and it was a very convivial occasion. With a lovely light evening and good weather everyone was able to enjoy the ride through the countryside.

On Monday 19th May 32 Members, helpers and friends were transported to the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex for their annual Outing. We were blessed with perfect weather and no traffic hold ups so had time for refreshments and to visit the shop and locomotive shed before embarking on the steam train. We had a ride through lovely countryside to East Grinstead and on the way we enjoyed a ploughman's lunch. Our journey home was uneventful and everyone had a very enjoyable day.

From the Treasurer. The club has been very fortunate recently in receiving a number of very generous donations from various sources, namely from The Essex County Bowls Club, the Albert Lucking Lodge of the Freemasons Grand Charity, in memory of Dolly Flack (who passed away last year following a massive stroke) and in memory of one of our own members, Sylvia Gargan, who passed away recently. We are very grateful to all who have been responsible for these donations. We have also been chosen as one of the three recipients of funds donated by customers of Asda - Shoebury, in their community giving sceme for the months of May & June 2014. Alan Watkins

On 11th July 2013, as club treasurer I received a cheque in the sum of £712 from Waitrose, London Road, Leigh-on-Sea. This was as a result of their very generous customers choosing the Stroke Club as beneficiary in the Community Matters Donation Scheme, run by the store. I would like to record the very grateful thanks of the club to Waitrose, and to all those generous customers, who decided to choose us as their nominated recipient.

Unfortunately we had to cancel tonight's Meet due to the bad weather. The illustrated talk 'Weeds or Wildflowers' by Julia Tetley has been re-booked for 8th April instead of the Quiz Night. Our next Meeting will be a Dinner at Essex County Bowls Club where we will be served tomato soup, roast beef, apple pie and custard follwed by tea or coffee. There will be an hour's entertainment and a raffle and we are expecting 50 guests. This is always a popular event and we are just hoping the weather has improved by then.

Congratulations to our Member Bert Goodbourn on recently receiving an award from the Stroke Association for being a 'Stroke Survivor of the Year'. Although being severely disabled by a stroke over 10 years ago and having numerous other health problems Bert has always remained cheerful and positive in his outlook. Southend Stroke Club gave him the confidence to get on with his life and work tirelessly to start a new club for the disabled. He has not only made new friends at the club but his positive attitude has also helped him to make good progress physically and remain independent.

On 21st May over 30 Members and friends enjoyed a day trip on the River Lee. A ploughman's lunch was served on board and the disability coach meant everyone was able to come if they wanted to. The following week we had an indoor 'Street Party'with a special Jubilee cake and ended up with a 'singalong'.
